AbstractInternational involvements at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), are described. UCB's international activities are not shaped by any official campus plan, but result from the efforts of individual scholars and various campus organizations. Four broad types of internationally-focused activities at UCB are as follows: academic exchange programs; the exchange of ideas and experience through conferences, seminars, and workshops; technical assistance involving a variety of experts and specialists; and extracurricular education such as music, film, art, theater, and sports. In contrast to the pattern for foreign students coming to UCB, 92 percent of local students who go overseas from UCB are undergraduates, and most of them major in the social sciences, languages, and humanities. In 1981 about 2,100 immigrant foreign students and 1,860 nonimmigrants were attending UCB, and most were studying engineering and the sciences. Of the nonimmigrant foreign students, the majority were male graduate students. Foreign scholars who are involved in teaching or research at UCB represent 72 countries and totaled 1,512 in 1981, most in the fields of science and technology. Technical assistance by UCB involves the transfer of knowledge, skills, and technology, often to the Third World countries. (SW)
