AbstractA study examined multiple outcomes of relaxation training simultaneously in seventh grade classrooms. "Project Relaxation" measured cognitive (achievement) and affective (discipline, attendance, tardiness, and self-concept) changes with a program of relaxation training for 532 seventh grade students in 10 private and public middle schools in South Carolina. The students in the experimental group participated for 15 minutes in relaxation training exercises at the beginning of each school day for 9 months. Teachers played a series of audio-taped relaxation exercises, developed especially for middle school students, including such techniques as the quieting reflex, autogenics, and visual imagery. Subjects recorded their temperatures using a wrist temperature indicator and biofeedback instrument. Researchers collected data on discipline, absences, and tardiness of students. At the end of the study, subjects completed the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (for achievement measurement) and the Self Observation Scales (for self-concept measurement). The study found improvement in students' self-concepts, discipline, and achievement. Detailed discussion of study results for wrist temperatures, discipline, absence, and tardiness data, as well as testing results, is presented. The report contains 14 tables, 9 figures, extensive references, and availability for select relaxation exercises and biofeedback instruments. (JMK)
