| Abstract | Intended to help teachers assess the effectiveness of their reading program, this paper suggests how teachers can emphasize comprehension in reading, what behaviors students demonstrate related to getting and creating meaning when reading, and how the classroom environment can promote reading for meaning. After describing effective teacher and student behavior during reading, holistic evaluations of student reading comprehension, and student created classroom environments, the paper presents a checklist, or evaluation guide, for teacher self-evaluation. Of primary importance in each section of the evaluation guide is the emphasis upon children's language, interests, and experiences; functional and useful reading; opportunities for self-correction when reading does not make sense; and the promotion of student risk-taking through reasonable guesses, predictions, and interpretations.
