| Abstract | In 1981, surveys were conducted of Maryland community college graduates and their employers to assess the effectiveness of the community college programs, the programs' relationship to job demands, and perceptions of the adequacy of community college preparation for employment. Surveys sent to the 7,120 students who graduated from a community college in 1980 requested information on current employment/educational status, reasons for attending college and for selecting a particular college, satisfaction with preparation for employment and quality of instruction, relationship of job to training, salaries, and goal achievement. In addition, surveys were sent to 1,023 employers of occupational graduates who were working full-time in a field related to their major. Study findings, based on responses from 58% of the graduates and 67% of the employers, revealed: (1) 36% of the graduates had attended college to prepare for a job or to update skills and 36% to prepare for transfer; (2) 40% had chosen their college primarily because of its convenient location; (3) 76% of the respondents were employed either full-time (54%) or part-time (22%); (4) 45% of all graduates and 63% of the occupational program graduates were employed in a job directly related to their college program; and (5) 95% of the employers felt that college preparation in job skills was at least adequate and 67% felt that community college graduates were better prepared than other employees.
