AbstractThis paper includes a discussion of the problem of multilevel Latin classes, a description of various techniques and perspectives the teacher might use in dealing with these classes, and copies of materials and exercises that have proved useful in multilevel classes. Because the reasons for the existence of such classes are varied, it is suggested that teachers learn to cope with them by asking for a longer period that spans the lunch period and by using the time qualitatively. Four basic ingredients for coping successfully are suggested: (1) developing a positive teacher attitude, (2) timing the class periods intelligently, (3) learning to exploit the sharing possibilities, and (4) planning for variety and student "doing." The discussion of each of these ingredients includes numerous examples of successful classroom practices and techniques. The emphasis in all levels is on enabling the students to take responsibility for their own learning through peer learning activities and various forms of small and large group activities. The attached examples of materials include excerpts from various types of Roman and medieval Latin literature and texts typical of Roman daily life. Exercises for various levels that are based on the these materials are also included. (AMH)
