| Abstract | Designed for student use in "Energy Conservation and Passive Design Concepts," one of 11 courses in a 2-year associate degree program in solar technology, this manual provides readings, bibliographies, and illustrations for seven course modules. The manual, which corresponds to an instructor guide for the same course, covers the following topics: (1) conservation as an energy source; (2) energy conservation and human effort; (3) types and efficiency of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; (4) domestic water use and conservation, water heating, and solar water heating systems; (5) the energy required by lighting and particular appliances; (6) passive solar design considerations, such as building design, placement, interiors, window systems, and thermal storage; and (7) passive solar design approaches, e.g., direct gain, thermal storage wall, attached sunspace, thermal storage roof, and convective loop.
