Abstract | This curriculum guide for the human sciences or social studies is intended for use in grades 1-7 in the early French immersion program. The program is organized around key concepts, generalizations, and themes derived from the social sciences, and allows the teacher a wide choice of content. The guide presents the following topics: (1) the objectives of the program to develop in the child knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values; (2) the teaching method, which is to develop concepts by using a research method; (3) an outline of an approach to the development of skills in the human sciences; (4) techniques the teacher might use to help children develop values; (5) techniques of evaluation; (6) a list of suggested class activities; and (7) a description of the characteristics of the course for each of the grades. The sections on the course for each grade provide the fundamental notion for the grade, a detailed statement of content, and supplementary reference materials. A listing of information sources and general references, and a resume of the kindergarten program are appended. (AMH) |
