Abstract | Brief information is given on 11 April events celebrated by Puerto Ricans: April Fool's Day; Easter; Arbor Day; and the birthdays of Washington Irving (first American author to gain fame and recognition around the world), Thomas Jefferson (3rd United States President), Jose de Diego (a notable poet, journalist, orator, lawyer, legislator, and social reformer), Rosendo Matienzo Cintron (one of the best known politicians on the island of Puerto Rico), James Buchanan (15th United States President), Samuel F. B. Morse (inventor of the electric telegraph and the Morse code), Ulysses S. Grant (18th United States President), and James Monroe (5th United States President). Designed as a teacher resource, the booklet includes a list of 30 historical happenings in April and various suggested learning activities (e.g., crossword puzzle, word games, fill-in-the-blank activities, discussion questions, writing activities, matching activities, and problem solving activities using math). The booklet concludes with a black history calendar for April citing 17 historical events, discussions of the achievements in literature by blacks and black family history through the fashions of the forties and eighties, a list of five good tips on writing, a writer's vocabulary list, and sketches for making a paper doll and clothes.
