| Abstract | This paper presents a model or framework of marital adjustment, for both the researcher and the practitioner, which provides description, explanation, and modification, i.e., ways in which the model can be changed that are theoretically connected with the description and the explanation. A typology of relationship processes is proposed which includes overt behaviors, covert behaviors, stimulous and response conditions, and methods of communication. The relationship skills which use the proposed processes are described including objectification, support/understanding, problem solving, and behavior change. A propositional inventory is presented which relates each relationship skill to marital adjustment. Relevant research is discussed for each hypothesis. The last section of the paper suggests parallels between the proposed behavioral model and systems theories, and points out the advantages of the behavioral model. Criticisms of the model are answered by emphasizing that it has been formulated at the microlevel, and should not be considered inadequate because it does not deal with macrophenomena, e.g., socioeconomic status and social resources.
