Abstract | The major objective of this module is to help students understand how water from a source such as a lake is treated to make it fit to drink. The module, consisting of five major activities and a test, is patterned after Individualized Science Instructional System (ISIS) modules. The first activity (Planning) consists of a brief introduction and a series of multiple-choice questions (with answers) related to objectives of activities which follow. Activities 2-4 focus on three different methods for purifying water, including use of activated carbon (activity 2), filtration (activity 3), and chlorination (activity 4) techniques. Procedures, materials needed, and questions are provided for each activity. The final activity is a hypothetical tour through a water treatment plant (using a diagram provided in the module), focusing on the methods used to purify water for human use. The last part of the module is a 15-item multiple-choice test. (JN) |
