AbstractThis report, the fourth in a series of comparative data studies of public community and junior colleges in the United States, presents information derived from a sample of 420 colleges. After introductory material presents background on the study and its objectives, chapter 1 outlines possible uses of the study data, points out limitations and the potential for institutional comparisons, and offers a summary of findings. Sample findings include: (1) half of the institutions spent more than 61% of their operating budget on instruction, research, public service, and academic support; (2) half spent more than 37% of their budget on student services, institutional support, and plant operation and maintenance; and (3) half had student/faculty ratios of less than 19 to 1 for credit courses. Chapter 2 presents median statistics for the entire sample covering expenditures, revenues, enrollments, salaries, and staff ratios. Chapters 3 through 5 provide data on institutions divided into quartiles on the basis of expenditure and revenue categories and enrollment distribution; offer medians and quartiles for peer groups classified by enrollment size and vocational/technical designation; and present scattergrams depicting relationships between budgetary, enrollment, and market variables. Appendices provide a description of study methodology, a sample survey form, definitions of terms, and a list of participating colleges. (HB)
