Abstract | This volume contains 45 conference papers and case studies presented by telecommunications professionals covering technical, business, user, and policy aspects of telecommunications in the Pacific hemisphere. Actual projects in existence or being planned, viewpoints, and guidelines for future development are discussed, with the proceedings organized by days to reflect the conference format. Following an introductory paper on communications and developing countries, three major sections cover current, in-progress, and future developments in telecommunications. The first section emphasizes basic telecommunications systems, beginning with a case study of the Chilean Telecommunications system. Individual papers then address communications in Taiwan, the Fiji Islands, Alaska, and the Philippines, as well as related general issues. A case study of the Alaskan telecommunications system is followed by a section focusing on developing telecommunications services and emerging technology, including packet and circuit switching technology, the voice store and forward system, and undersea systems. The final case study of the Australian National Satellite System is followed by papers addressing future services and projected communications developments, both generally and specifically, in the Pacific Islands, Japan, and New Zealand. Individual abstracts, reference lists, tables, and figures are included with many papers. (LMM) |
