Abstract | This counselor's guide contains information for use in helping obtain apprenticeships. Although the focus of the guide is on apprentice training in New Jersey, it also contains general information of use to counselors in other locations. The first section contains an overview of apprenticeship training today and a discussion of the benefits of apprentice training. Described next are the operation of and general entrance requirements for apprentice training programs in New Jersey. Various steps to assist students in obtaining apprenticeships are explained, including identifying potential candidates, selecting an occupation, identifying an occupation as apprenticeable, determining student qualifications, determining job suitability, searching for the job, and making the final commitment. The first part of the guide consists of a listing of persons, places, and publications that can aid both counselors and students in the apprenticeship-search process. Appended to the guide are a list of occupations recognized as apprenticeable, a certificate of approval for apprenticeship training, a certificate of completion of apprenticeship, and an apprentice registration card.
