AbstractThe Comprehensive School Mathematics Program (CSMP) is a program of CEMREL, Inc., one of the national educational laboratories, and was funded by the National Institute of Education (NIE). Its major purpose is the development of curriculum materials for kindergarten through grade 6. An Extended Pilot Test was scheduled for spring 1982 for several school districts using CSMP through the sixth grade. Several Mathematics Applied to Novel Situations (MANS) scales were developed and tried out in spring 1981, and several scales used with fifth graders were retested with sixth-grade students at the same time. This material was designed to present preliminary evaluation data from two school districts regarding the achievement of CSMP versus non-CSMP sixth graders, and note statistical data from the tryout of scales. Results indicated that CSMP classes continued large advantages in fractions and decimals, elucidation, and number relationships. At the second investigation site, an advantage CSMP pupils had in probability as fifth graders disappeared, but so did a disadvantage they had with estimation scales. (MP)
