Abstract | This special journal issue contains nine articles on the subject of using popular literature in the classroom. Subjects covered in the articles include (1) using vernacular supernatural literature to teach the skills of literary analysis, (2) teaching Agatha Christie's "Curtain," (3) pairing the classics with detective fiction, (4) using fantasy literature with students afraid of great literature, (5) the classroom potential of science fiction, (6) the novels of S.E. Hinton, (7) using adolescent fiction to teach values clarification, (8) using traditional fables in the classroom, and (9) encouraging student involvement through popular books. A concluding article discusses ways to cope with censorship. (JL) |
