AbstractThis study was conducted to develop a process for identifying the effects of vocational education research and development projects and activities and to identify the effects of selected research projects on the vocational, technical, and adult education programs and students in Wisconsin. Technical and adult education faculty and staff who had participated in 15 research and development projects were interviewed on site, and questionnaires were mailed to other such faculties. A total of 48 questionnaires were used, with a 46 percent return rate. Analysis of data collected showed that most of the projects had been successful and that results or products developed were still in use. The study concluded that the following characteristics are needed in order to have a successful research and development project: (1) clearly defined objectives, definitions, and procedures; (2) strong support from the administration; (3) adequate support staff; (4) adequate start-up time; (5) good communication among project staff members; (6) a project director who is involved from the beginning of the project; and (7) acceptance of the project within the district.
