AbstractDesigned to provide specific, practical help for educators in starting or improving school public relations programs, this guide tells how to make each school building the focal point in informing the public about programs and activities, building confidence in what schools are doing, developing an awareness of the importance of education, and improving the partnership between parents and teachers. The guide is intended to help (1) integrate the home, school, and community in efforts to improve schools and (2) interpret the aims and objectives of the schools to the community. Stressed in the guide is the imporance of planning good communications by researching what the community knows and wants to know about the schools. Administrators are advised that good manners and good first impressions are essential elements of day-to-day public relations. Frequent positive communciation with staff, students, and parents is a must. All members of the school staff should be involved in the communications effort. Evaluations and a diary should be used to continuously improve a school-community relations program. The appendices contain a school district performance rating scale to be completed by parents; types of news releases and their intended audiences; and an example of a news release. (Author/MLF)
