Abstract	Programs and projects receiving outside financial support at the General College, University of Minnesota, are described in several articles. In "Balancing Career Preparations and Liberal Learning: A Project Funded by the Northwest Area Foundation," Roger Larson describes the extension of General College courses and programs into the business community to serve both employees who did not attend or complete college and regular university students. In "Cooperative Education Helps Link Campus with the Community," Patrick Kroll discusses campus and community bonds that are formed through community internships. Jerry Freeman, in "The Help Center: Higher Education for Low-Income People," describes services offered to students who are both low-income and either a member of a racial minority group or academically disadvantaged. These include academic advising, financial and employment problem solving, and individual and family counseling. In "Act Together and University Day Community Programs for High-Risk Youths," Andrew Nelson discusses a partnership between South High School, Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota, local private businesses, youth service agencies, and the community to coordinate efforts to serve the needs of high-risk youth. Bruce Scheleske and Sharon Scheleske in "Upward Bound," explain the Upward Bound summer residential program of intensive classwork in English, reading, mathematics, and study skills. "The General College Retention Program," by Candido Zanoni, describes efforts to improve retention of Asian/Pacific students. Finally, in"TRIO/Special Services," Thomas Skovholt briefly addresses a project designed to improve the academic performance of economically, educationally, or physically disadvantaged freshmen. (SW)
