Abstract	A pragmatic approach to second language instruction sees the text as a source of content which can be used in a variety of ways; the method is a teacher's decision. As the teacher assumes more of the decision-making role, the textbook becomes the framework on which the course can be built. Techniques for adaptation are given and case studies are outlined to illustrate the process of adapting various lesson components. The "case studies" are: (1) dialogues adapted to illustrate the general adaptation techniques which were outlined earlier in the article; (2) grammar exercises adapted to communicative skill development; (3) vocabulary and affective activities; and (4) reading adapted to individualized instruction. The final section takes a chapter from a currently used textbook and brings together a number of strategies to illustrate how they interact and complement one another. (AMH)
