AbstractThis pamphlet on leading discussions is the first of 16 in a series to provide leaders in adult activities with sound introductory material to give practical help in using a method of adult education or working in a particular area. Its objective is to help leaders lead a discussion group or lead one better. Ten articles and how- tos are included. The first and last articles, "Why Group Discussion?" and "Education Through Deliberation," discuss some social and philosophical aspects of discussion. "The Leader's Role" shows how to spread the task of leading among all group members. Four pieces from a longer article by Thomas Gordon are designed to give practical help in working with the group, planning meetings, and improving discussion skills. These include "How Am I Doing?" (a checklist), "Planning for Discussion,""Releasing Group Resources," and "Evaluating Your Skill.""When Books Participate" focuses on how to choose and talk about books in a way to help a group work out its own problems. How to use drama as a kick-off to discussion in educational programs is the topic of "Drama as a Starter.""Are There Any Questions?" suggests practical techniques for how to plan and use question-and-answer periods.
