| Abstract | Law has been neglected as an area of inquiry in citizenship education. Fundamental to citizenship education is the teaching of the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights in elementary and secondary schools. The bicentennials of these documents will be celebrated within the next decade. Law-related inquiry could enrich the contemporary meaning of citizenship education through examinations of the intersecting worlds of private affairs, practical affairs, and public affairs. To understand the dimensions of the right to privacy, its nature, and its history and contemporary importance, citizenship curriculum for the schools and community should be based on the study of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In the world of practical affairs, the citizen should be educated in the legal dimensions that affect the life of the individual in the forms of rules and regulations, ordinances and statutes, contracts, and civil rights. Individuals must be informed and sensitized to their rights and responsbilities under the law. In the third area of citizenship education, public affairs, life as a United States citizen should be dealt with. Within this area, a basic understanding of liberty, justice, equality, property, and power is fundamental for the citizen in comprehending and being active in the world of public and political affairs.
