AbstractAs one of a number of pilot projects to test the concept of using community and resource development Extension agents and paraprofessionals to help citizens and public officials interact and deal with controversial issues confronting their communities, the Citizens Education Project worked with citizens in selected communities of the five counties on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland in gathering information relative to the rate of unemployment and underemployment in those communities. Data were collected from three field surveys made in the five counties. Two of the surveys described the employment-unemployment picture in those communities and included information on training and skills, both possessed and desired. The third survey determined the composition of the existing labor force, of industries in the area, and of the opportunities for jobs and training provided by those firms. Data indicated that a large percentage of the unemployed were 25 years of age or less. That group and the early thirties age group were willing to undergo occupational training for job entry or occupational upgrading. It was recommended that the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service work with community groups to develop a career development continuum and to improve community quality of life. (Author/CM)
