| Abstract | Currently available British and American materials for teaching English listening comprehension to non-native speakers are covered in this bibliography. Most items listed include student's workbook and teacher's manual, and most are accompanied by tapes. Materials are grouped under four headings: (1) materials whose primary focus is conversation, (2) materials for teaching comprehension of narrative passages, (3) comprehensive (four-skill) courses and other materials which have good listening components, and (4) other materials. Each entry provides bibliographic information and a brief four-part classification, which indicates level, variety, source (authentic or scripted), and suitability for independent study. Materials that the authors have used are given additional annotation. Seventy-four items are listed, almost all dating from the 1970s or 1980s. Five pages of suggestions for choosing and evaluating listening comprehension materials are appended. (Author/JB) |
