Abstract | An examination of the grounds for fundamental beliefs about education and the basic concepts, doctrines, and practices that express such beliefs is presented. The overall objective of the book is to provide teachers with an insight into why and what they are teaching, and how these purposes relate to the school, the values of the community, and the society at large. Five educational theories are discussed: existential, pragmatic, realistic, idealistic, and classical. In considering each of these theories, an exploration is made of its proper designation and definition, the ontology, metaphysics, and epistemology of the theory, and the application of the theory in the areas of religion, aesthetics, power, and politics. The second section of the book translates these theories into educational practice. Each philosophic approach is examined as it affects (within the classroom) human relations, teaching style, classroom control, methodology, instructional activities, curriculum, testing and evaluation, organization and scheduling, administration and supervision, building and site, and community relations. Short bibliographies follow each of the chapters on the theories and their applications. (JD) |
