| Abstract | This report presents findings from a national survey of the 1975-80 high school classes, focusing on drug use and related attitudes of American high school seniors. The materials highlight data on grade of first use, usage trends at earlier grade levels, intensity of drug use, attitudes and beliefs about various types of drug use, and students' perceptions about their social environment. A description of the research is provided in the introduction, followed by an overview of key findings from 1980 data, e.g., a decline in the use of cigarettes, marijuana, PCP, inhalants, and barbituates, and stability in the use of cocaine and heroin. An increase in the use of stimulants and methaqualone is reported, accompanied by an increase in the proportion of seniors who use illicit drugs other than marijuana. The conclusion reflects the continued trend of widespread drug use among high school students. (NRB) |
