Abstract	A center was established in 1978 to develop a program of curriculum materials designed to enable school districts in Alaska to strengthen and improve the English and native-language skills of Yup'ik children. The program is described here, as well as its rationale and philosophical assumptions, the materials that have been developed, and the implementation of those materials in Alaskan school districts. The materials, known as the Developmental Language Program (DLP), are designed to increase and expand upon the existing communication skills of Yup'ik students within the context of their Alaskan experiences. Generally speaking, the DLP consists of curricular materials which infuse language activities and experiences into subject areas. The discussion of the English and Yup'ik DLPs includes a description of the teachers' handbooks, the set-up of the units and activities, a sample lesson plan consisting of five modules, supplemental activities, and implementation of the language units. The discussion concludes with an outline of the teacher-training program and a summary of initial feedback. A sample unit is appended. (AMH)
