| Abstract | A study was conducted to examine the perceptions of young people in attributing the causes of poverty in our society. The study also examined youth's attribution of the state of poverty of three target groups: blacks, whites, and American Indians. Data were collected through structured interviews with 842 white and black children aged five through seventeen, from a large city. Responses were categorized as attributing poverty to structural factors, fatalistic factors, individualistic factors, and inadequate education. Young children typically cited fatalistic reasons (e.g., robbers took the people's money) for poverty. Children in grades three through eleven primarily gave structural reasons, for example, inflation or discrimination. Children frequently attributed the poverty of blacks and Indians to individualistic factors, most often criminality and racial discrimination. Fifteen percent of the children expressed disbelief that white people can be poor. (Author/MK) |
