Abstract	The Annehurst School (Westerville, Ohio) has become known as a school that works. More than just a success story, Annehurst has provided the setting for educational researchers to dissect classroom practices, teacher attitudes, management styles, and community-school relationships. Annehurst began in 1970 with a new open school building, a new principal, and 13 teachers. The school now has a teaching staff of 19 regular and eight part time special teachers for 450 students from kindergarten to fourth grade. Initial reactions to developments at the school were not all positive--there was resentment from other schools in the district, where Annehurst became known as the "golden ghetto," and parents were concerned and suspicious. However, the principal emphasized the need for collective decision making, and the staff became a cohesive team. Gradually, a pattern of cooperation evolved: parents became more involved with expanding the school programs; a successful series of staff development programs was organized and managed by one of the teachers; and a cooperating venture with a local university was set up, leading to the publication of the "Annehurst Curriculum Classification System". Difficulties were experienced with a Title III grant and a district teacher strike, but, for the ten years of Annehurst's operation, teaching and learning experiences there have been overwhelmingly positive.
