AbstractThis collection of papers resulted from a series of retreats, seminars, and colloquia held to help the Oklahoma State University Dean's Grant project increase involvement among regular education faculty in the education of handicapped children and youth. The series also sought to generate an increased level of coordination and communication among the departments and programs in the College of Education about the educational needs of mainstreamed students. The first paper outlines knowledge, skills, and commitments which are essential to teachers working in a mainstreamed classroom. In the second paper, the need for higher professional standards in the teaching profession is examined in the light of new demands for educational accountability. Issues which have been raised by laws designed to protect the handicapped and selected cases which have been brought to court are examined in the third paper. The fourth paper presents an overview of safe and convenient school facilities to accommodate the handicapped. Selected books for students from kindergarten through the sixth grade that deal with the handicaps of mainstreamed children are reviewed in the fifth paper. The sixth paper raises the question of fairness in testing disabled children and their placement in school. The final paper points out the difficulties and needs in a multicultural approach dealing with handicapped children in ethnic minorities. (JD)
