AbstractEmphasis in this third-grade component of a teacher-developed K-eighth grade program on crime resistance is on responsibility for personal behavior. Major objectives of the program are to help teachers promote and maintain positive student attitudes and behavior, assist students in meeting their responsibilities, and help students insure their own and other people's safety and welfare. Specific objectives of this component are to help third-grade students examine attitudes and values, compare values, develop a desire to be responsible, explain positive solutions to conflict, understand the necessity for rules and laws, increase their understanding of authority, explain safety procedures in dealing with strangers, identify personal and home property, and review bicycle safety. To meet these objectives, students are involved in a wide variety of activities, including expressing opinions on various topics, discussing concepts such as values and conflict in class, identifying responsible and irresponsible behaviors in various situations, acting in a play based on consequences when responsibilities are neglected, reading and discussing a story on the importance of responsible behavior, making up and offering solutions to conflict situations, writing letters to parents to explain the school program, filling in blanks in a multiple-choice quiz regarding conflict resolution, listing bicycle laws, analyzing pictures of authority figures, and participating in crossword and fill-in-the-blanks games involving safety. For each activity, information is presented on objectives, materials, procedures, teacher background, and reinforcement questions. Student worksheets are provided wherever necessary and blank spaces are included for teacher's notes at the end of each activity. The unit concludes with a student reading list, a resource directory, and a glossary of terms. (DB)
