| Abstract | The use of law, force, social pressure, and other forms of compulsion to "encourage" lifelong learning and to expand the market for adult education has been a growing concern for many adult educators. Because of the proliferation of requirements for mandatory continuing education (MCE), a task force was formed to study MCE, and to mobilize opinion against it. The eight papers presented in this task force report represent the studies conducted, and the opinions generated, in opposition to MCE. Topics discussed include a rationale for voluntary adult education rather than MCE; MCE and the knowledge explosion; the implications of MCE on democracy; the ethics of MCE; the failure of the MCE approach for education for the poor; and a portrait of individuals who have been forced to attend adult education and have failed. A literature review of research on MCE for professionals is included. Task force participants and a statement of the task force purpose are also included. (KC) |
