| Abstract | Recently, a surge of interest in the development of a general theory to coordinate the volume of literature dealing with the family has developed. Systems theory suggests that: (1) human systems experience constant interaction with other systems; (2) component parts of systems are valuable and influential; and (3) living systems operate to acquire useful information. Families are dynamic entities with complex structural rules to regulate the distance between members of a system. When systems theory is applied to the study of the family, its explanatory and predictive value can be realized in the form of proposition and testable hypotheses. Systematic organization of the ideas associated with systems theory promotes the advantageous use of universal terms and propositions toward explaining family behavior. A general systems theory may be useful in explaining and predicting patterns of family behavior. (Author/NRB) |
