Abstract | Activities originally designed to teach third-grade students about measuring liquids are presented. Included in the document are reasons to teach students how to use the basic units of liquid measurement and the development of a "laboratory" within the classroom where pupils could work while minimizing the mess. Some of the topics developed for small-group directed water-pouring include: (1) comparing volume; (2) ordering containers by size; (3) the "double" series of standard measures; (4) naming the standard measures; and (5) the base two system of numeration. The document concludes with suggestions for evaluation and a list of other materials and activities for non-liquid measurement. (MP) |
