Abstract	Team Resources for Youth (TRY) is an agency which works with dropouts and students experiencing difficulty in school. To gain insight in dealing with local youth, TRY conducted an investigation of student attitudes at Caprock High School in Amarillo, Texas. One questionnaire was administered to 746 students and a second questionnaire was completed by 64 of the 362 dropouts contacted. Over 70% of the school population was Caucasian, and 25% was Chicano. Chicanos dropped out at a higher rate than Caucasians, girls dropped out more frequently than boys, and most who left did so in the tenth grade. Most students who remained in school reported positive attitudes about their school and felt they would be well-prepared for college or work after graduation. One-fourth of the students were not involved in school-sponsored activities; dropouts had a very low involvement rate. Over half of the students' parents had graduated; however, Chicano parents had a much lower graduation rate. One-third of the students had a sibling who had dropped out; Chicanos and students whose parents had dropped out were overly represented in this group. Low academic performance was cited as the major reason for leaving school, with family conflict, student pregnancy, and financial problems reported as additional reasons. (NRB)
