AbstractDesigned to provide learning experiences related to the culture of Native Americans, this pilot cultural curriculum is intended for use as supplementary material in the Social Studies program for grades K-12. The curriculum is a cooperative effort of the school district and the Indian community and is based on the California Social Sciences Framework. Three major California Social Sciences concepts used in organizing the lessons are: (1) Environment/Resources - students will become aware of the ways that Indians and non-Indians use their environment and resources to provide for their basic needs; (2) Culture/Diversity - students will develop an awareness and appreciation for Indian cultures and recognize Indian contributions and influences upon society; and (3) Interaction/Interdependence - students will become aware of ways that Indian and non-Indian groups affect each other and how varying degrees of dependence are required in such interactions. There are lessons for kindergarten and primary grades 1-3, intermediate grades 4-6, and secondary grades 7-12. Each lesson includes goals, objectives, background information, learning activities, evaluation, and resources. Produced with Title IV-A Indian Program funds, these Indian cultural K-12 curriculum units are to be used only in classes in which there are Indian students. (CM)
