Abstract | Many studies report severe role overload problems for spouses and particularly for the wives in dual-career families; whether this overload is perceived by subjects themselves or by the researchers is not always clear. To clarify the overwork issue, the perceptions of university faculty women (N=151) regarding their career and domestic work loads were investigated. Subjects estimated the time they spent on their professions, their households, and their families, and judged to what degree they felt overworked. All subjects, who were divided into four groups according to their marital and motherhood status, reported working many hours per week, with mothers working considerably more (over 100 hours per week) than childless women (over 70 hours per week). However, none of the subjects reported feeling particularly overworked. If professional women with families are not aware of, or do not admit to, being overworked, they may not attempt to alleviate pressure which could have serious implications for their families, parenting, and career development.
