Abstract	This publication attempts to give the reader some insights and suggestions for meeting the challenge of educating the whole child. It begins by pointing out the importance of the development of positive self concepts in children. The early development of self and general self concept is described, and then attention is focused on the impact of schools in general and of teachers in particular on the self images of youth. A review of the research evidence discloses that the impact can be a negative one. However, a concerted effort to bring about positive changes can be successful. Additional research is needed in many areas of self concept development. There is a great need for a more comprehensive understanding of the construct "self concept"--how it develops, what influences it, how it changes, and how the changes can be measured. More action research is needed to identify effective change strategies. (CJ)
