Abstract	This manual was developed for the use of students in a basic training course in systematic curriculum development. This unit of the course deals with the selection of educational materials and provides students with a general background on the kind and type of media that will be most effective in a developing nation. In a discussion of ways that both local and imported educational materials may be used to produce educational improvement, the history and development of traditional African education are analyzed. Differences between Western and African education are pointed out, and the possibilities of augmenting traditional African teaching methods with imported educational concepts are considered. A bibliography of reading materials on African culture is included. A list is presented of some of the problems generally associated with educational development in Africa, with reference to instructional media. (JD)
