| Abstract | This document contains 20 papers which were delivered at a conference on college-level sociology teaching. The aim of the conference was to provide a forum where sociologists could exchange ideas on how to improve sociology instruction. Thirty-four sociologists from state universities and private and city colleges participated in the conference. The document is presented in five major sections--each of which corresponds to a major conference theme. Section I, Rationale, offers an inquiry into the teacher/learning process and suggests that sociology teaching will be more credible if sociology teachers make more use of the classroom as a laboratory for testing central tenets of scientific inquiry. Section II, Planning, offers nine papers on various aspects of assessing objectives, teaching methods and curricula, and students. Section III, Performance, includes two papers on analyzing the classroom environment and assessing student participation in sociology-related field experiences. Section IV, Appraisal, contains six papers discussing grading, assessing critical thinking, and evaluating teacher effectiveness and course innovations. The final section, Overview, offers two papers which discuss the bureaucratic and disciplinary contexts of sociology teaching and the conflict over whether teachers should be rewarded for publishing or good teaching.
