Abstract | Based on the experiences of the University for Man (UFM) in Manhattan, Kansas, this model for rural adult learning presents guidelines for people and organizations to start free community education programs. The manual provides specific steps in beginning, operating, and expanding programs which utilize community leaders and resources, and which require little or no expense for the free university teachers or students. The document discusses a basic sequential plan for starting a new program and emphasizes variances according to the size and needs of the community. An organizational checklist illustrates important points of consideration for all aspects of the program. Five chapters on "The Session" include information on timetables, teachers and volunteers, brochures, registration, and publicity. Six chapters devoted to "Organization" cover coordinator's role, advisory boards, legal matters, funding and finance, special projects, and evaluation and planning for future development of the program. Continual emphasis is stressed throughout the manual on meeting the needs and interests of the community, with flexibility and variation used, depending on changing needs and responses. (JD) |
