| Abstract | Dorothy Day and the American Catholic Worker Movement are paradoxical in that they are at the same time conservative and radical, liturgical and rebellious, holy and subversive. These apparently paradoxical qualities become clear when translated through the components of the prophetic movement model. Within this model, prophetic movements are characterized by the following qualities: (1) they address both the religious and the political establishments; (2) they are led by a charismatic leader who existentially identifies with a "spiritual source" and with the poor; (3) their rhetoric advocates radical changes in the political establishment--using confrontational strategies--and professes moderate changes in religious institutions--using managerial strategies--but announces no changes in the adherence to basic spiritual values; (4) their rhetoric includes declarations and reproaches about the current political and religious orders, and concludes with either warnings or promises for the future; and (5) the rhetoric dramatizes the current state of affairs through the charismatic leader's reliance on parables and vivid stories.
