Abstract | The purposes of this project were (1) to conduct a follow-up study of the first fifty graduates of the External High School Diploma Program at Waukesha County (Wisconsin) Technical Institute in order to ascertain program strengths, weaknesses and impact; (2) to conduct a follow-up study of program terminations and identify reasons for discontinuation; and (3) to conduct a follow-up study of program inquirers to determine reasons for non-registration and current educational status. Project findings indicated a high level of program satisfaction among the graduates. Program strengths were associated with the general content of the program, program staff, as well as days and hours of program operation. Weaknesses tended to focus on location and content in the area of mathematics. Impact of the program was most evident in terms of personal satisfaction. The area in which the program had the least impact was occupational change. Individuals who terminated the program did so primarily for personal reasons; the highest rate of terminations occurred during the diagnostic phase. Inquirers did not register for the program for a variety of reasons. Some were ineligible because of residency and/or age requirements. Time, personal problems, and lack of transportation were other factors. While a few of the inquirers subsequently enrolled in either a GED or Adult High School Program, the majority had not enrolled in any high school completion program. (Author) |
