AbstractDesigned for special education teacher aides, the workbook is the basic text for a five module, competency based, inservice training program. The first module focuses on the role of the teacher and the teacher aide as a team in serving handicapped children. The second module stresses the characteristics of normal child development and the characteristics of handicapped children (listed by five principle handicapping conditions). The third module explains P.L. 94-142 (the Education for All Handicapped Children Act) including the individualized educational plan (IEP) and defines the components of diagnostic prescriptive teaching (objective observation, functional assessment, instructional objectives, task analysis, teaching strategies, teaching social skills, and preparing IEPs). Module 4 considers the unique needs of families with handicapped children and the role of the aide in working with these families. The final module outlines basic job skills necessary for the teacher aide, such as knowledge of school rules and regulations and ability to cooperate with the teacher. An annotated bibliography of training films, filmstrips, and videocassettes is appended. (PHR)
