Abstract | The first volume of a nine volume series contains the summary and federal policy recommendation report of the National Needs Assessment Project, which surveyed the educational media and materials needs of more than 30,000 special educators in 33 states. After an executive summary, the report includes an introduction to the study, a description of the questionnaires used, a description of the respondent population, and a discussion of the study's special education student population. The major portion of the report is organized into the following six major areas of identified need (as determined in the survey): (1) more media and materials development, especially in the curriculum areas of social behavior and reading comprehension; (2) additional resources for teachers to develop their own materials; (3) improved parent directed instructional materials for home use; (4) development and refinement of a national materials information system; (5) more efficient and accessible distribution systems for loan materials and hardware; and (6) better training and assistance in the use of media and materials.
