AbstractThis volume is concerned with the professional development of teachers and the teaching profession. It explores the many new developments in teacher education and the effects these will have on the status of teachers as professionals. Contributors discuss how political, economic, and demographic pressures have forced a reduction in the number of teachers entering training in the developed countries, in contrast to developing countries where there is a need for more teachers. Advances in technology and new opportunities for innovation are examined as they affect the role of the teacher. Parts one and two look at current trends and issues in the training and development of teachers. Parts three and four present case studies from different parts of the world. Part five examines some of the methods used in the education of techers and part six looks at the present and future role of research in teacher education. In part seven, selected contributors express personal viewpoints. An extensive annotated bibliography and index are also included. (Editors/JD)
