AbstractThis issue of "Forum" magazine for adults and accompanying teaching units for use with students of all age levels deals with recent value trends. "Forum" is one of a group of educational publications and teaching units that JC Penney stores provide for local community groups and school consumer education programs. The magazine contains varied articles to help citizens raise questions about their role as educator, business leader, community leader, and/or consumer advocate as they help others learn to think through their value choices. One article provides a checklist of "Old Values/New Values" and then goes on to trace the subtle changes that have been occurring in America's value system. Another describes the fading work ethic and suggests ways of coping with new values in the workplace and the school. Other articles talk about women's liberation, the impact of the changing values on families, values in the hidden curriculum, and the effects of changing social pressures on the teaching of consumer education since its origins in the '30s. The teaching units include a variety of easy to implement problem-solving activities. In one unit "Money: Earning, Spending, Saving" familiar nursery rhymes and real-life experience pictures pose situations which enable children to learn about money as a medium of exchange. Through a role play, classroom discussions and worksheets provided in the unit "It's My Basic Right" junior high school students examine their values and beliefs about feelings of entitlement. The influence of values on our eating habits is the subject of the workbook intended for senior high and young adults. A brief history of the consumer movement and consumer education activities for adults are included in the unit "Insights Into Consumer Issues." (Author/RM)
