AbstractGuidelines for conducting art activities with young children are provided in this curriculum manual for teachers of pre- and primary school-age students. Part One of the manual presents a philosophy and approaches for setting up an art program. The first chapter explores the concept of creativity, how it can be encouraged, and identifies some of the problems teachers commonly face in the art area. Chapters Two and Three consider the impact of the physical environment on children's behavior and ability to learn. Practical suggestions for arranging furniture and displaying materials in the art area are offered. Chapter Four examines some of the concerns and questions asked by teachers, such as how to recognize stages of development in art, what to say to children about their art work, scheduling art activities, how to handle parents' requests for "products", the issue of the coloring book, and other aspects of the teacher's role. Part Two consists of five chapters, each of which considers a different art medium (printing, painting, collage and assemblage, weaving and stitchery, and puppets). Lists of materials are presented and suggestions are made for setting up the activities, structuring exploratory experiences and extending the activities. An annotated bibliography on art and a list of Child Development Associate (CDA) competencies are appended. (Author/RH)
