Abstract | Guided writing after model paragraphs is an effective technique to initiate beginning and intermediate students of English as a second language into English composition. The technique of oral composition requires that the students prepare statements according to a model for oral delivery. In class composition, one student goes to the board and acts as the class scribe; the class will correct his errors as he answers prescribed questions on the board. This technique may be varied by using a direct dictation rather than question answering. Yet another technique involves breaking the class up into small groups, each of which will produce a composition. Relaxation and guided imagery may evoke material for a writing assignment. All these techniques enhance writing skills by making the experience of writing more pleasurable for the student. (JB) |
