| Abstract | Components of preservice teacher training at the San Jose State University Demonstration Preschool Program are described in this paper. Based on the work of Jean Piaget, the program is intended to demonstrate the integration of six mildly to moderately handicapped preschool children into a class of 14 non-handicapped preschool children. The Piagetian approach used in the children's program is extended to the preservice model, which incorporates the Piagetian concepts of discovery learning, disequilibration, concrete experiences and reflection. This conceptual framework is put into practice through five components of preservice training: structured observations, practical experiences with children, discussions, recommended readings and reflective writing.
