Abstract | This guide to teaching writing in English as a second language to adult students suggests ways in which writing can be taught as a means of communication, in which formal correctness is linked to stylistic appropriateness, and in which the ability to write logically and grammatically connected sequences of sentences is fundamental. An initial discussion of writing as a subject explores the nature of writing and distinguishes between institutional and personal writing. The teacher is introduced to writing exercises through two pitfalls: providing bad cues to students, and providing good cues but, for one of several reasons, obtaining bad results. The content of writing exercises is then treated in its varieties: narrative and description of objects, people, places, and processes. Sections are devoted to comparing and recommending, to questions and answers, and to dictation. The integration of reading, speaking, listening, and writing is briefly discussed.
